Canterbury is a historic cathedral city located in the county of Kent, in the Southeast England. It is known for its rich history, being one of the most ancient cities in England.

History

Early History: The area was originally settled by the Celts and later by the Romans, who established a town here around AD 43, which they called Durovernum. The town became known as Cantwaraburh after the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons in the 5th century.
Religious Significance: Canterbury's most famous landmark is the Canterbury Cathedral, which has been the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury since the Christianization of England in the late 6th century. It was here that Saint Augustine established his mission to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity, making Canterbury the spiritual capital of Anglican Communion.
Medieval Period: The murder of Thomas Becket in 1170 by knights of Henry II made Canterbury a major pilgrimage site, leading to its further development. The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer immortalized this pilgrimage in literature.
Modern Era: During World War II, Canterbury suffered significant damage from The Blitz, but much of its historical architecture has been restored or preserved. Today, it remains a significant cultural and educational center, home to the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University.
