- Born on November 24, 1394, in Paris, Charles of Orleans was the son of Louis de Valois, Duke of Orleans and Valentina Visconti. His early life was marked by the political tensions between his father and John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy.
Political Career:
- After his father was assassinated in 1407, Charles became the Duke of Orleans at the age of 13. His uncle, Charles VI of France, acted as his guardian.
- He played a role in the Hundred Years' War, fighting against the English. Captured at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, he was imprisoned in England for 25 years.
Imprisonment and Literary Work:
- During his captivity in England, Charles wrote a considerable amount of poetry, including ballades and rondeaux, which were influenced by his personal experiences of loss and longing. His works are significant for their early use of the French language in literature and their emotional depth.
Return to France:
