Harvard Graduate School of Design
The Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) is one of the world's leading design schools, located at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Established in 1914, the GSD offers advanced programs in architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, design engineering, and real estate.
History
The GSD was originally established as the School of Landscape Architecture in 1914, but it was not until 1936 that it became the Graduate School of Design, incorporating architecture and urban planning. This change was largely influenced by Walter Gropius, who was appointed as the chair of the architecture department in 1937 after fleeing Nazi Germany. His arrival marked the beginning of the school's transformation into an influential center for modern architectural education.
Programs
- Architecture: The GSD offers Master of Architecture (MArch) and Master in Design Studies (MDes) degrees, along with advanced degrees like the Doctor of Design (DDes).
- Landscape Architecture: Students can pursue a Master in Landscape Architecture (MLA), which focuses on both design and the science behind landscape architecture.
- Urban Planning: The Master in Urban Planning (MUP) program prepares students for roles in public, private, or non-profit sectors.
- Design Engineering: A relatively new program, offering a Master in Design Engineering (MDEng), blending design with engineering principles.
- Real Estate: The Master of Architecture in Urban Design (MAUD) and Master of Design Studies with a concentration in Real Estate Development are among the offerings.
Facilities and Resources
The GSD is housed in the Gund Hall, designed by John C. Portman Jr., which itself is a notable piece of modern architecture. The school boasts extensive resources including:
- The Frances Loeb Library, one of the largest architecture and design libraries in the world.
- Advanced technology labs, studios, and workshops for hands-on learning.
- The Center for Green Buildings and Cities, which focuses on sustainable design and urban development.
Notable Alumni
Many influential figures in architecture and design have graduated from the GSD, including:
