José de San Martín
José de San Martín was a pivotal figure in the South American Wars of Independence. Born on February 25, 1778, in Yapeyú, Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, which is now part of Argentina, he was of Spanish descent but chose to fight for the independence of the Spanish colonies in South America.
