Vincent Rijmen is a Belgian cryptographer known for his significant contributions to the field of cryptography, particularly for co-developing the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).
Vincent Rijmen was born in 1970 in Belgium. He pursued his higher education at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering in 1993. Following his interest in cryptography, Rijmen continued his education and received his Ph.D. in 1997 under the supervision of Bart Preneel.
After completing his Ph.D., Rijmen joined the COSIC (Computer Security and Industrial Cryptography) research group at KU Leuven. Here, he collaborated with Joan Daemen on the development of the Rijndael algorithm, which was later adopted as the AES. The selection of Rijndael as the AES by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 2001 was a pivotal moment in modern cryptography due to its efficiency and security against known attacks.
Apart from AES, Rijmen has made numerous contributions to cryptographic research:
Currently, Vincent Rijmen holds a professorial position at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) where he continues to research and teach in the fields of cryptography and information security. His work extends beyond theoretical aspects to practical implementations and security protocols.
Rijmen has authored or co-authored numerous publications. Some notable works include:
